PROJECT FLAMINGO

I, Xan the owner and founder of BENA Woman, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in February this year (2025), and was lucky enough to start chemo a month later and had surgery in August. I am so so blessed to have the means to pay for private medical aid which enabled my wonderful team of drs to kick my treatment plan off swiftly, with no waiting time.

The majority of women in our country are not as lucky as me. Most of them do not have access to timely and dignified cancer treatment and we want to help change that.

Project Flamingo is an NGO that has worked for the last 15 years to change the trajectory of breast cancer patients’ journeys in the state sector. By intervening on multiple levels of the treatment pathway at public hospitals across the Western and Eastern Cape, they bring hope, dignity and healing. Their biggest contribution are the vital cancer surgeries they perform to help reduce the terribly long waiting times. By mobilising their teams of volunteer surgeons & anaesthetists and carrying the cost of nursing staff and consumables, they use existing but empty hospital infrastructure over weekends to effectively decrease waiting times and make a tangible impact on the lives of these patients and their communities.

On Mandela day this year (2025), Project Flamingo performed 39 life-saving surgeries on breast cancer patients. In total they have done almost 2000 of these operations. Just incredible.
